Montessori inspired kids' rooms

My younger sister is thinking of a Montessori inspired room for my niece. The Montessori way is a mattress on the floor so that the child can get in and out of the bed at their leisure and without difficulty. Everything should be at kid level, ie. art hung at kids' eye view. Here is a collection of photos to help my sister get some ideas:

I've always liked the idea of a mattress on the floor - no worry about the child falling out and if done right, I rather like the casual, campy look that can be achieved.

What do you all think about having the mattress right on the floor?

  1. Mattresses on the floor is a great idea. Safe, practical and easier to maintain. Thanks for this tip!

  2. Isabella has a boxspring with a mattress on top and the boxspring is right on the floor. I often think about removing the boxspring so that her bed consists of just the mattress on the floor...very tempting.

  4. i am definitely going to do the tent bed for the house, and i really like the one with the owl in the tree for the cottage (but it would have to be a cardboard cut out because of the round wood).

  5. I think they look great and those rooms are all pretty amazing. I have to admit to liking having Gabe in the crib because I didn't want him up and around without me knowing about it. But I'm lazy like that.

Also, I actually think, for Gabe, he was more comfortable in the crib--maybe he felt cozier/safer or whatever. Even when he could crawl out before we got him a bigger bed, he would sleep through the night. As soon as we got him in a toddler bed (that also had sides on it), he started getting up in the middle of the night, every night. And I mean, every night.

Every kid is of course different so who knows! She may totally love the bed on the floor especially if Jen puts it up now. It'll just be what she knows. It is definitely safer, especially if you get a climber!

  6. Tent beds are awesome. Isabella saw the 3 tent beds photo and was begging for me to do that with her bed.

Collette - Simon loved his crib. LOVED IT! Slept great in it and everything. Now that he's in his bed, he wakes up in the night, walks over to his door, knocks, and goes back into his bed while he waits for me to go in his room. For awhile he was doing well with sleeping through the night but not the last few weeks. No idea why.

Not sure when Jen plans on redoing her room. Gia doesn't even crawl yet so no worry about her getting moving too much.

  7. Those rooms are adorable. Inspirational when trying to play our sons room. He won't be on the floor though... we've already got beds for our boys, so we will use them... I do like the idea of everything being at eye level and accessible.

  8. I had never really thought of the whole eye level thing. Makes total sense and makes the room more theirs.

  9. julia & collette- I think that if your kids had began in a floor bed, perhaps they would be so used to it that now they wouldn't get up at night? maybe that is one of the benefits, that the kids don't have to transition from the crib to the bed, so getting up at night is never an issue? or Perhaps it is an issue much earlier, when they become mobile....I'm sure it just depends on the child. Just a thought (my baby is also in a crib, but after looking at these rooms I'm thinking about removing it, I will have to weigh the pros and cons)

  10. kaelee - I think you're right about if they had started off on the floor that they wouldn't get up in the night. I'm curious as to sleeping habits of kids who say go from a crib to a floor bed at around one year old...

    1. My now 9 month old has always slept on the floor on the crib mattress in our room. Wish I did that with my other 3 kids, lol... My 2.5 year old still asks why we "took away her bed" (the crib)

  11. These rooms are amazing! We've done a family floorbed since my son (almost 4) was about 8 months old. It's worked very very very well for us. I loved that, as my son got a little older, he was able to get up on his own and without hurting himself if he woke from his nap and I wasn't in the room. We also have a 16 month old daughter and she travels when she sleeps. It's a comfort knowing that she's not going to hurt herself if she falls out of bed in the middle of the night. Both of my kids do a great job of staying in bed all night, whether I'm there or not, and the ease of a floorbed makes it a comfortable play space for them during the day, too. I can't imagine having it any other way!

  12. Floorbeds are defionitely the way to go. My son was in his toddler bed and I took the guardrail off because I knew that soon I'd be changing his mattress to a thicker, more appropriate mattress and that the guardrail would be useless because it would be too short. He did well without the guardrail - no falling out of bed. Changed to the new mattress and the second night, he fell out of his bed and just lay there crying ont eh floor. It was so sad. Now I have a pillow under the fitted sheet to act as a guardrail. Not the greatest solution but it's worked so far. If my parents hadn't bought his toddler bed and had I thought about it more, I would have loved to just have his mattress on the floor.

  13. My daughter started in my bed and transferred straight to her floor bed next to mine. She's very independent and just gets up after nap and comes out. It she wakes in the middle of the night she well climb the step stool I have at the bottom of the bed. She is 18 months. As a Montessorian I always wanted to try the bed on the floor. To each his own.

  15. My oldest son's bed frame broke and we've just had his mattress on the floor. I thought it would look bad to other people....who knew it's trendy! lol
