newborn abandoned wild bunnies

Our neighbour Marc was weeding his front yard the other day and grabbed a handful of weeds. He looked down at the weeds in his hand and within the weeds were little newborn wild bunnies (still covered in goo). 7 in total. Not knowing what to do (and thinking they were baby mice at first), Marc and Pablo took them to the vet clinic down the street. It was there that they discovered they were bunnies and were told to go put them back in case the mother comes back. They put the bunnies back and we covered them back up with grass and dirt and then sprinkled flour over the top in the hopes that we could see animal prints in the flour - hopefully momma's prints. It poured all night long so that didn't work. Marc went to check on the bunnies and only four made it through the night. Marc and Pablo started googling what to do to save the bunnies and found that the bunnies needed food fast - kitten meal replacement milk. The boys went to buy some and some syringes and came back home and got to feeding - 5cc's for each bunny every 24 hours for the first week (UPDATE: we were just told that the 5 cc's needs to be given 3 times a day - so 2 more feedings today) and 10cc 's after that. You should have seen them eat - they were starving. Here are some photos I took of the little guys. I don't think they liked the flash too much but I made it quick.

  1. Oh my god. I didn´t even recognize they were bunnies when i first looked at the pictures. I have tears in my eyes when i think about the tiny three who didn´t make it. I wonder what happened to their mommy. I know that happens all the time in the nature but that´s just so harsh. :(
I hope the four will make it and have a good life, where ever they end up living it.

  2. Be careful getting too attached... baby bunnies are really, really hard to hand raise... most don't make it :( Good luck, though, and hope you get to be the lucky ones!

  7. I found your blog because we are in the same situation. Found bunnies, a couple of them were dead, and poor things were freezing (despite it being very warm outside). How long did you have them for? Did they all survive?

  8. We only had them for a couple days. None survived unfortunately.
